From 1st April 2010, homeowners can be paid for each unit of electricity that they generate from an approved micro generation system.
The income is paid tax free, it is linked to the RPI and paid for 25 years.
A roof mounted Solar PV system is one of the approved technologies that qualifies for the Feed in Tariff.
The tariff from April 2012 is not as generous as it used to be, but real returns of about 8% are still possible in the first year.
As the FIT payments are linked to RPI, the returns in subsequent years will increase.
